Company Asset Misuse and Protection

DFS was retained by a multi-billion dollar, transmission and distribution power company within the Pittsburgh area. This company requested to have systems examined in an effort to identify any misuse of internet or intranet assets by company personnel.

It had been alleged that an employee may have emailed sensitive documents and/or photographs to competitors. DFS recommended a well known software utility for company wide deployment for current and future monitoring while DFS began the use of digital forensics to examine past occurrences.

DFS exams revealed that an employee in question had not emailed sensitive information to competitors but was involved in other matters that were clearly outside the scope of employment.

Utilizing the DFS forensic results, system administrators and HR personnel of this company determined that a mid level administrator was abusing internet privileges by “day trading” throughout the work day. This activity was determined to be at a level that was well outside the scope of acceptable usage, not caught by system firewalls or system administrators and had been within “hidden” areas of the computer system.

It was also determined that this individual had been and was currently seeking employment with competing companies thus posing a security risk to proprietary information held by the current employer.
